Seletar is a remote planning and residential area located towards the northeastern part of Singapore. Seletar planning area shares borders with Sengkang planning areas towards the southern part, Punggol planning area towards the Easter region Simpang and Yishun planning area towards the western region and the Straits of Johor planning area towards the northern region. Seletar planning area is among one of the oldest places with local Malay names. The name Seletar in Malay refers to the native coastal inhabitants previously known as Orang Asli Seletar.
The original Seletar region was a multimillion rubber plantation farm belonging to the United Rubber Plantations Company in Singapore. The land was approximately 600 acres big. In the early 1920s, the rubber plantation estate was acquired by the Straits Settlement government through legal purchase and handed over to the British Royal Air Force to be used as a British military air base in Singapore. Development of the airbase commenced immediately and later completed in 1929 and officially opened the next year. The Seletar airbase was mainly used to operate military planes service Singapore, Indian and Malaysia. It also doubled up as a public airport until the late 1940s when the Kallang international Airport was commissioned for public use.
Seletar region has a poor record when it comes to accommodation and residential purposes. The region remains scattered with old colonial bungalows that were constructed to house senior military personnel. The Singaporean government demolished 174 old British military cottages in 2007 to create space for construction of the Seletar Aerospace Park. The other remaining bungalows are still standing with a good number rebranded into restaurants, aerospace training schools, beverage outlets. Close to 100 units have been used for residential purposes.
Seletar planning area has a rich history when it comes to conservation of environment as well as the colonial history in Singapore. Most of the old facilities that initiated the development of Seletar have been conserved or converted into other useful facilities or tourist attraction sites. The former British military airbase now functions as a universal aviation airport for leased flights as well as a training ground for pilots and other flight operators. Some of the former colonial bungalows have been put up for conservation and other renovated as part of the Seletar Aerospace Park.
Recent developments have seen new life being breathe into Seletar. There is a host of new amenities and facilities that have enabled the transformation of the old Seletar to the new attractive place it is now. The new lifestyle Seletar Aerospace Park and reserve play host to a variety of stores and concert grounds while the preserved colonial bungalows have been turned into spas, restaurants, shopping outlets.
