Marine Parade is an urban residential estate and planning area located in the Central Region of Singapore. Overlapping through the landfill of the southeastern coastal region of Pulau Ujong, Marine Parade town operates as a barrier between the Eastern and the central areas of the city-state. Marine parade is surrounded by other residential and planning areas such as Geylang extending towards the northern regions, Kallang extending towards the northwest side, Bedok extending towards the northeastern part, Marina East extending towards the southwestern sides and the larger Singapore Straits extending towards the southern regions.
The early history of Marine Parade’s town can be heavily associated with the Katong area. All the way through the early 20th century, the Katong area which later changed to Marine Parade was a luxurious place mostly occupied by the affluent Peranakan community of Singapore. Katong experienced huge developments in the Straits Chinese culture which led to massive developments in a unique architectural style that transformed most towns and cities in Singapore.
Marine Parade as it is popularly known today predominantly comprises of residential estates and housing flats constructed along the southernmost regions of the town’s estate that were developed after the reclamation of the east island coast in the 1970s. Marine Parade mainly comprises public housing estate consisting of more than fifty-five blocks of Housing and Development Board issued flats. This federal estate is divided by the Main Still South Road which offers easy access to other main highways, like the East Coast Parkway which leads to the Singapore Changi Airport and the city area. In Addition to the existing road links in Marine Parade town, it is projected that the town will soon be served by the Mass Rapid Transit network under construction that is estimated to be completed by 2023.
Irrespective of Marine Parade being a town that was given estate status by the Housing and Development Board, it operates differently from other cities in Singapore as it is served differently by a town center known as the Marine Parade Promenade. This town center is made up of a major commercial complex, numerous neighborhood shops, and a Parkway Parade with residential houses and a modern shopping center.
This town also contains a Community Building known as the Marine Parade community building that was constructed in 2000. It is a huge community house that hosts the Marine Parade Community Library as well as the Marine Parade Community Club. Being a three-story complex, it houses other numerous facilities like a fully air-conditioned sports hall, a 263-seater theatre hall, a covered rooftop basketball court and a glass-walled gymnasium.
